Teddy's Football League
The TFL was created in 2020. Inspired by creating fake NBA teams and making starting 5s, I created 36 fake NFL teams. My idea was to create a league similar to the NFL using these new teams. Before the start of this league, I did a QB draft for all 36 teams. It wasn't very cool, as I knew that would take forever if I were doing that for each position. Soon after, I completely scrapped that QB draft and got rid of 4 teams, thus making it a 32-team league now. The 4 teams that were scrapped were the Phoenix Pythons, San Diego Archers, Oregon Beavers, and Michigan Wolverines. All but one were added to the league later on.
To start my league, I needed a draft, so I printed out the Madden NFL 20 ratings for each position and an overall list. This is what helped me do a draft. Selected by random order, the Season 1 Inaugural Draft was set. After doing 4 rounds of snake-style draft picks, I was tired. Each roster was obviously more than 4 players, so everyone who wasn't drafted after 128 picks was thrown into a wheel and randomly put onto each team. Once the rosters were complete, I downloaded an NFL schedule and replaced all the NFL teams with the names of my teams. With everything ready to go, I began the TFL.
The same process has been used throughout the last 6 years, with some big milestones or changes throughout its history:
Rookie Drafts are happening every 3 seasons, starting with the Season 4 Draft.
Sticking to the 4 rounds I did in the Season 1 Inaugural Draft, I continued to do 128 picks in the Season 4 and 7 Drafts. In Season 10, the rookie drafts expanded to 5 rounds and 180 total picks. And in Season 16, it expanded to 200 total picks. In Season 19, a sixth round was added, making the draft 240 total picks.
First appearing in Season 4, trades were introduced. They disappeared in Seasons 5 & 6, but returned in Season 7 and have been around ever since.
In Season 5, the league increased from 16 to 17 regular-season games played, and in Season 14, it increased from 17 to 18 regular-season games.
2 League Expansions in Seasons 10 & 14 to move the league from 32 to 40 teams.
Starting in Season 10, I had to create the schedules from scratch due to the influx of teams in the league.
Multiple playoff changes were made that adjusted the number of playoff spots open (14 to 20) and changed the playoff format accordingly.
3 Roster Changes in Seasons 10, 16, & 19 increased the number of roster spots from 31 to 52/53.
In Season 18, the first rebrand happened, turning the Hawaii Warriors into the Hawaii Tikis. In Season 20, the Delaware Destroyers rebranded into the Delaware Admirals. In Season 21, the Alabama Razorbacks rebranded to the Alabama Crusaders.
In Season 20, the TFL Hall of Fame enshrined its first class, with classes following every season after that.
The TFL will continue to grow in as many ways as possible and for as long as I can sustain this project. I've incorporated data from over 3,300 players and simulated more than 6,400 games, including 20 Super Bowls. This project is one of the greatest things I have ever made. Thanks for looking!
