Selected by the Orlando Spartans with the 54th overall pick in the Season 1 Inaugural Draft, David spent the first five seasons of his career in Orlando before signing with the Tennessee Angels in Season 6. He later joined the Canton All-Stars in Season 11, where he finished the final decade of his 20-season career.

Throughout his career, David earned three Pro Bowl selections and was named First Team All-Pro once, establishing himself as one of the league's most reliable linebackers. He was twice named Orlando Spartans Player of the Year and later earned Canton All-Stars Player of the Year, reflecting the impact he made on multiple franchises. Although his individual accolades were modest compared to some Hall of Famers, David's leadership, football IQ, and steady play made him a cornerstone of every defense he anchored.

Defensively, David recorded one career safety, but his value extended far beyond statistics. He consistently elevated the units around him, serving as the emotional leader of playoff-caliber teams for nearly two decades. His ability to diagnose plays, stop the run, and make timely defensive plays helped his teams remain competitive year after year.

David helped lead his teams to 11 winning seasons, 11 playoff appearances, and eight division titles. He was a perfect 3–0 in NFC Championship Games, helping guide both the Tennessee Angels and Canton All-Stars to the Super Bowl. Despite reaching football's biggest stage three times, he finished 0–3 in Super Bowl appearances, making him one of the greatest players never to win a championship. Even without a title, Lavonte David's remarkable consistency, leadership, and longevity cemented his place among the most accomplished linebackers of the TFL era.
